KALIBO, Aklan — A jail guard at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in this capital town is in hot water over the escape of a woman who tried to sneak in contraband in the facility.
Jail warden Norberto Meciano vowed to conduct an internal investigation to determine the liability of JO3 Portia Gerardo and other jail guards on duty.
Ria Militante of Brgy. Tigayon here visited her husband, inmate Jerry Militante, at the jail in Brgy. Nalook here last week.
Gerardo was inspecting the belongings in the bag of Ria Militante when she found a suspected shabu, which the police believed the woman intends to give her husband.
Jerry Militante was facing a possession of illegal drugs charge.
When Ria Militante noticed that Gerardo found the contraband, she grabbed her bag and ran toward the exit, Meciano said.
She then embarked on a tricycle bound for the town proper. Gerardo did not run after her.
Gerardo said she was unable to immediately go after Militante because she cannot abandon her post.
The police were also wondering why it took the BJMP a day to report the incident to them.
